Regular consumption of lemonade π seemed to have a relieving effect on patients with kidney stones. But how? New research π§βπ¬ from China suggests natural nanoparticles may be involved. Here is a brief summary of their research.
Lemonade is a popular home remedy for kidney stones. However, drinking too much lemonade is also not good for the body. Too much lemonade causes acidity and dental problems. Therefore, finding the exact mechanism of how lemonade may be relieving kidney stones can be useful to make new medicines to treat patients while avoiding all the side effects of consuming too much lemonade. Scientists from China first wondered what in lemonade π could be helping to reduce kidney stones. Based on previous studies, they hypothesised that some nanoparticles released from lemons into its juice might contain some specific minerals that fend off kidney stones. They purified these nanoparticles from lemons and fed them into experimental rats π that were induced to form kidney stones. They found that lemon-derived nanoparticles slowed down kidney stone formation in these rats. While these nanoparticles may be working to reduce kidney stones in rats, further research and clinical trials are required to analyse if they also work in human patients.
