Astronomers’ struggle to create a diplomatic push to protect our night sky 🌌.

The night sky is an increasingly threatened resource due to urbanisation and light pollution. Astronomers are now taking a diplomatic approach to protect it through advocacy and education. This effort is not without challenges as some countries see light pollution as necessary for economic development while others view it as a serious environmental threat. The International Dark Sky Association is an organization that works to protect the night sky through education and advocacy. They have already had success in promoting dark sky policies, such as an ordinance in Flagstaff, Arizona requiring all new streetlights to be fully shielded to minimize light pollution. However, satellite constellations, such as those launched by SpaceX, have created significant light pollution in the night sky. Astronomers are pushing for regulations that would limit the number and brightness of these satellites. Protecting the night sky is not only important for astronomy but also for the environment and human health. Light pollution disrupts ecosystems and can negatively impact wildlife, while exposure to artificial light at night has been linked to health problems such as sleep disorders and cancer. As the world becomes more aware of these issues, there is hope that progress can be made. Astronomers are working to protect the night sky and ensure that it remains a source of wonder and inspiration for generations to come. With continued effort and cooperation, we can ensure that the night sky remains a beautiful and valuable resource for all of us. #ProtectTheNightSky #DarkSkyMovement via @ScienceMagazine https://www.science.org/content/article/astronomers-stumble-diplomatic-push-protect-night-sky
